Tamekea had overcome a long term problem with addiction and regularly attends group meetings at a treatment center on Vermont Avenue in Koreatown. She’s achieved two months of sobriety and plans to attend school at Los Angeles City College. She said a friend she was waiting for was helping her get back on her feet. Her struggle with substances lasted 15 years, part of that time while she was living in Koreatown and would visit a dealer on Normandie Avenue a few blocks south of Wilshire. She described Koreatown as having a large but hidden drug scene.
